Record #191760:

Canada Day in Resolute: performance, ritual and the nation in an Inuit community / Richard C. Powell.

Title: Canada Day in Resolute: performance, ritual and the nation in an Inuit community / Richard C. Powell.
Author(s): Powell, Richard C.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: London: I.B. Tauris
In: High places : cultural geographies of mountains and ice. (2008.),
Abstract: Discusses notion of Arctic as "homeland", through examples of encounters (e.g. explorers and missionaries with Inuit, and scientists with adventure tourists). Notes that encounters between Inuit and Europeans have often included element of conflict, and have revolved around power relations. Examines cross-cultural encounters in ethnographic present. Argues that different human actors perform important social practices as they interact in Arctic, and that Arctic spaces can be conceptualised as involving social formations that must be analyzed not as inherently pathological but as commonplace.
