Record #191709:

The effect of sea-ice loss on beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in west Greenland / M.P. Heide-Jørgensen, and 5 others.

Title: The effect of sea-ice loss on beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in west Greenland / M.P. Heide-Jørgensen, and 5 others.
Author(s): Heide-Jørgensen, M. P.
Date: 2010.
In: Polar Research. (2010.), Vol. 29(2) (2010)
Abstract: Reports results of aerial survey to estimate abundance of beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) on their wintering ground in west Greenland in March-April 2006 and 2008. Notes clear relationship between decreasing sea-ice cover and increasing offshore distance of beluga sightings, suggesting that belugas expand their distribution westward as new areas on banks of west Greenland open up earlier in spring with reduced sea-ice coverage or early annual ice recession.
