| Abstract: | Discusses Constantine Phipps' 1773 expedition to Spitsbergen and extent to which it may be regarded as introducing new scientific discourse with respect to Arctic. Phipps appears to be first Arctic explorer who came to region with modern, scientific mind, and first to demonstrate fully scientific approach in report he wrote and published on his return. Argues that Phipps pioneered view of Arctic as being above narrow, nationalist interests. |
