Restoring aboriginal culture through community-based type 2 diabetes screening / Richard T. Oster, Ellen L. Toth.

Title: Restoring aboriginal culture through community-based type 2 diabetes screening / Richard T. Oster, Ellen L. Toth.
Author(s): Oster, Richard T.
Toth, Ellen L.
Date: 2010.
In: International Journal of Circumpolar Health. (2010.), Vol. 69(3) (2010)
Abstract: Discusses possible cultural barriers to type-2 diabetes screening (e.g. language barriers and possible perception that screening interventions represent threat to indigenous autonomy). Recommends that such screening be "community-based" to enable aboriginal peoples to control knowledge of their own communities, and to legitimise traditional culture through lifestyle improvements that are culturally grounded.
