Abstract: Reviews landform evidence for glacial extent and timing in Urumqi and Ateaoyinake river valleys, and Terskey Ala Tau, At Bashi, Kyrgyz Front and Torugrat mountain ranges. Presents geomorphological maps and palaeo-ELA reconstruction, and discusses dating uncertainties. Synthesises Tien Shan (Tianshan) glaciations, identifying at least five during Late Quaternary. Compares chronology with summer insolation and climate records from deep sea cores and Vostok, GRIP and Guliya ice cores, establishing that local last glacial maxima predated LGM, with high altitude snowfall main factor controlling Tien Shan glaciation. Discusses moisture sources, lack of synchronicity in glacial advances and palaeoclimatic implications of fluctuations, including important relationships between mid-latitude westerly, Siberian High and Asian monsoon.
