| Abstract: | Examines deposits associated with Middle Swedish end-moraine zone immediately west of Mt. Billingen. Multiple moraine ridges and surrounding inter-moraine flats in study area are underlain by 20-50 m of clay, some of thickest units outside Swedish coastal areas. Reports stratigraphy, sedimentology, age and palaeoenvironment of clay underlying inter-moraine flats. Interprets rhythmites in clay as varves deposited in Arctic marine environment some 12,150 cal. ¹⁴C years ago, i.e., much more recently than moraine ridges formed during ice-front oscillations. Authors neither support nor reject suggestion that ice margin retreated to northern edge of Mt. Billingen during Allerød, causing Baltic Ice Lake to drain. |
