Abstract: Examines how well experimental designs address goals of treatability evaluation (identification of limitations to rate or endpoint of bioremediation for specific soil-contaminant combination) and whether results and interpretations can be related back to bioremediation in soils at low temperatures or soils that undergo seasonal freezing. Reviews treatability studies involving in vitro microcosms, mesocosms using soils and autochthonous material from contaminated site, and field trials. Discusses recent advances in distinguishing between abiotic losses and biodegradation, accommodating effects of repeated freeze-thaw, multi-parametric monitoring, and modelling and predictive studies. Presents guidelines for choice of treatability technique, monitoring of variables, and consideration of scale-up issues.
