Record #191592:

Forty-seven years of research on the Devon Island Ice Cap, Arctic Canada / Sarah Boon, and 3 others.

Title: Forty-seven years of research on the Devon Island Ice Cap, Arctic Canada / Sarah Boon, and 3 others.
Author(s): Boon, Sarah.
Date: 2010.
In: Arctic. (2010.), Vol. 63(1) (2010)
Abstract: Reviews research on Devon Island Ice Cap, identifying questions still limiting understanding of response of Arctic ice caps to climate variation. Mass balance measurements began in 1961. Research was first to investigate: role of meltwater in seasonal velocity variations on a polythermal Arctic ice cap; use of air temperature rather than net radiation as proxy for energy driving surface melt; influence of changing frequencies of specific synoptic weather configurations on glacier melt and mass balance. Describes past studies of ice cap geometry, mass balance and dynamics and their relationships, and current research supporting ESA's CryoSat2 mission, and IPY project examining hydrodynamics of large tidewater glaciers on Belcher Glacier. Pays tribute to late Roy "Fritz" Koerner, who pioneered much of work.
