| Abstract: | Describes habitat, behaviour and life cycle of Isotoma saltans and other alpine glacier flea species (Onychiurus alborufescens, e.g.). Isotoma saltans (order Collembola) measures 1.5-2.5 mm and can jump several centimetres. Describes physiological adaptions, such as glycoproteins providing freezing resistance down to -20°C and special enzymes and cellular structures enabling movement at -15°C. Fleas inhabit small fissures in glacier surface, pools of meltwater, or shaded undersides of supraglacial rocks in summer (where eggs are typically found) and die rapidly above 12°C. Winter is spent at glacier/snow interface. Speculates that diet consisting of wind-blown organic matter (particularly conifer pollen) and algae may provide chemicals that inhibit freezing of gut contents. |
