| Abstract: | Describes achievements to date, current limitations and future prospects for remote sensing of frozen ground. Notes challenge represented by sensing of what is essentially subsurface phenomenon. Discusses geographical distribution of permafrost and factors controlling its distribution (latitude, vegetation cover, topography, geology, hydrology and snow cover). Reviews features indicative of permafrost presence and degradation, progress (particularly using active and passive microwave sensors) in mapping permafrost extent and active layer depth and in monitoring seasonally frozen ground. Discusses areas for future research. |
