| Abstract: | Summarises research on satellite remote sensing of glacier and ice sheets, covering studies of equilibrium line, characteristic glacier surface zones or glacier facies, glacier velocity, glacier mapping, change detection, surface features, and snow pack characteristics. Emphasises principles and theory of methods, excluding ground studies and most airborne ones. Provides overview of sensors (using visible spectrum and active and massive microwave) commonly used in snow and ice studies. Outlines new opportunities for northern hydrology arising from recent and planned spaceborne sensors such as MODIS, ENVISAT MERIS and ASAR, ICESat and CryoSat. |
