| Abstract: | Describes thirteen rock glaciers in mountains of Central Asia and discusses rock glacier deformation. Deformations identified include breakdown of glacier body and independent movement of lower part, and stretching due to earthquakes, topography over which rock glacier moves, etc. Observes that technogenic rock glaciers formed from long-term freezing of mining waste are strongly deformed, and identifies one such rock glacier in initial formation stage in Tien Shan. Notes that similar rock glaciers in mountains of Kola Peninsula and in vicinity of Norilsk city have demonstrated catastrophic movement and transformation into landslides and mudflows. |
