Record #191568:

Stable isotope study of water sources and of an ice core from Borţig ice cave, Romania / Z. Kern, and 3 others.

Title: Stable isotope study of water sources and of an ice core from Borţig ice cave, Romania / Z. Kern, and 3 others.
Author(s): Kern, Z.
Date: 2009.
Language: Russian transliteration entered into original records using BGN/PCGN 1947 romanisation of Russian; Cyrillic text in MARC 880 field(s) reverse transliterated from this by automated process; BGN/PCGN 1947 text then upgraded to Library of Congress romanisation.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2009.), Vol. 107 (2009)
Abstract: Presents results from year-round monitoring program in Borţig ice cave (third largest in Romania) to evaluate suitability of ice deposit for palaeoclimatic reconstruction. Seeks to establish origin of water from which subterranean ice body is formed. Presents model of cave and ice deposits and describes water sampling, ice coring and temperature measurement. Discusses dynamics of floor ice surface, stable isotope contents of precipitation, dripping water and ice, and relationship with surface temperature. Concludes that unaltered atmospheric precipitation is primary source for floor ice, contributing throughout year. Stable isotope variability is significant, with δ¹⁸O ratios in ice more appropriate than δD for climate reconstruction. Annual thermal signal appears to be preserved.
