In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2009.), Vol. 107 (2009)
Abstract: Notes that of 9000 caves recorded in karst area of Slovenia, 633 can be described as ice or snow caves and 102 have "led" (Slovenian word for ice) in name. Distinguishes high mountain caves, attracting only recent attention, from caves below treeline, often long-known and used for agricultural and commercial purposes. Identifies 30 "ice-caves" with permament ice and reviews historical descriptions of six, particularly from Valvasor's 1689 description of Carniola (Kranjska): ice caves Ledenica pod Taborom and Ledenica pri Planinci, cave Jazbina, Globočic collapse doline, Velika ledenica v Paradani and Triglavsko brezon. Ice was observed in caves during late 17th century summers at much lower altitudes than today's 500 m limit. Volume of ice where it persists has decreased over last 100 years.
