Abstract: Presents study of different shear rates in snow and influence of impulsive vibration on snow stability. Tests included: different types of stressed snow under polarised vibrations; high-frequency shear load measurements and high-speed video recording during facture caused by impulsive vibration; and interaction between shear rates (slow and impulsive applications of force) and snow destabilising effects. Proposes new experimental method using liquid as additional shear load. Reports that snow shear strength is significantly less for high rate loading (typical of earthquake) than for low rate loading. Compares this effect for variety of cases and snow types and discusses implications for snow stability assessment.
