| Abstract: | Estimates volume of glaciers in 17 mountain ranges of Russian Altai (Altay) using radio-echo sounding data from 2003, and compares glacier data from 1850, 1952 and 2003. Examines glacier volume distribution with respect to aspect and altitude. Identifies decreases of 21.7% in area and 22.4% in volume from Little Ice Age to 2003, with mean annual decreases of 0.12% and 0.14% since 1952. Estimates that future scenario of 3°C increase in summer air temperatures and 50% decrease in precipitation would see glaciers lose 96% of their volume, with remainder confined to highest elevations. |
