Abstract: Presents detailed analysis of Saami prehistory from 5000 BC to 1500 AD along 500 km of Bothnian coast in northern Sweden. Notes that Saami were highly specialised seal hunters who also practised animal husbandry, farming and metallurgy in ways analogous to Norse. In early 14th century Saami were assimilated by Swedish state, converted to Christianity and driven inland where many later became nomadic reindeer herders.
