Record #191280:

Antarctic fur seals: responses to oceanographic variability at Iles Kerguelen / Mary-Anne Lea.

Title: Antarctic fur seals: responses to oceanographic variability at Iles Kerguelen / Mary-Anne Lea.
Author(s): Lea, Mary-Anne.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Saarbrüken: Verlag Dr. Muller
Abstract: Examines inter-relationships between foraging ecology of breeding female Antarctic fur seals, their mesopelagic prey, oceanographic conditions and success of pup rearing at Iles Kerguelen from 1998-2000. Includes intra-population variability in diving activity; detailed description of fatty acid composition and calorific value of prey species from Kerguelen region; comparison between years of diet composition as assessed by scat analysis and fatty acid signature analysis; diving behaviour in relation to fine-scale variation in oceanographic parameters within foraging range of fur seals on nightly basis; and inter-annual comparison of all aspects of foraging ecology and maternal provisioning strategies with environmental variables, in relation to allocation of maternal resources to pups as measured through growth rates and body composition.
