Includes chapters on 1912 Swedish proposal to British Colonial Office for cooperative scientific research; history of Discovery Committee and British loss of sovereignty over Antarctic whales with advent of pelagic whaling; Norwegian Lars Christensen's programme of science and whaling in 1920s and 1930s; culture of polar exploration in Cambridge between world wars, centred on Scott Polar Research Institute; Swedish geographer Hans Ahlmann's Arctic expeditions of 1930s; and organisation of Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1949-52. |
