Record #191248:

The instability of the thermohaline circulation in a low-order model / Alain Colin de Verdière.

Title: The instability of the thermohaline circulation in a low-order model / Alain Colin de Verdière.
Author(s): Verdière, Alain Colin de.
Date: 2010.
In: Journal of Physical Oceanography. (2010.), Vol. 40(4) (2010)
Abstract: Proposes "three-box" model to investigate instability of thermohaline circulation. Argues that, as instability occurs initially in Arctic water through formation of haloclines and halt of convection, explanatory model must have at least surface layer and deep layer. Derives two dynamic sub-systems from model: one governs well-known convective circulation mode and other governs stratified circulation mode (which is appropriate to describe fate of thermally dominant circulation when convection is turned off by negative salinity perturbations.
