Abstract: | Describes staffs found at Fort Nadym, seventeenth to eighteenth century administrative centre in Western Siberia. Identifies these as matchmaker's staffs on basis of ethnographic data. Reconstructs historical wedding rituals of indigenous people of northwest Siberia. Also examines data from Ostyak and Samoyedic synchronous sites from Voikar and Polui (Obdor) settlements and Russian town of Mangazeya, revealing role of staff as trade and exchange agreement. |
