Record #191143:

Health assessment and diseases of the Weddell seal, Leptonochotes weddelli [sic], in Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica / R.A. McFarlane.

Title: Health assessment and diseases of the Weddell seal, Leptonochotes weddelli [sic], in Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica / R.A. McFarlane.
Author(s): McFarlane, R. A.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Berlin: Springer
In: Health of Antarctic wildlife : a challenge for science and policy. (2009.),
Abstract: Describes study in November and December 1999 in Vestfold Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, aimed at developing baseline health data for Weddell seals using epidemiological approach based on non-invasive observations of large cross-sectional sample of population to describe clinical presentations of disease and smaller case-control study for detailed clinical examination, with opportunistic post-mortem examinations and necropsy of recently dead seals. Results include data on incidence and distribution and timing of respiratory and ocular discharge, respiratory foam, and external wounds; serological tests for Brucella organisms; estimated white cell counts associated with clinical or laboratory conditions; and summary of biochemical and haematological parameters. Study found no evidence of direct human-mediated pathogen introduction.
