Record #191141:

Investigation of the 1998 mass mortality event in New Zealand sea lions / W. Roe.

Title: Investigation of the 1998 mass mortality event in New Zealand sea lions / W. Roe.
Author(s): Roe, W.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Berlin: Springer
In: Health of Antarctic wildlife : a challenge for science and policy. (2009.),
Abstract: Describes mass morality of New Zealand sea lions at Dundas and Enderby Islands in sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands in January and February 1998, during which 1,606 pups and 74 adults were observed to have died, though actual adult mortality was probably much higher. Investigations indicated that while most adults examined died as result of bacterial septicaemia caused by organism likely to be from Campylobacter genus, there were also significant number of severe bacterial infections caused by other pathogens, including organisms likely to be part of normal environmental flora. Cause of dramatic increase in mortality was probably multi-factorial, with some unidentified external event, or combination of events, causing increased susceptibility to infectious disease.
