Record #191140:

An unusual mortality event among Adélie penguins in the vicinity of Mawson station, Antarctica / Knowles R. Kerry, and 3 others.

Title: An unusual mortality event among Adélie penguins in the vicinity of Mawson station, Antarctica / Knowles R. Kerry, and 3 others.
Author(s): Kerry, Knowles R.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Berlin: Springer
In: Health of Antarctic wildlife : a challenge for science and policy. (2009.),
Abstract: Describes unusual mortality event in November 2001 at breeding colonies of Adélie penguins, setting out field and clinical investigations undertaken and examining likely cause of death. Though circumstances surrounding event originally suggested infectious disease and event was investigated as such, mortality was most likely caused by extreme weather conditions during which penguins were crushed by sea ice. Authors outline steps taken by Australian Antarctic Division to prepare for and respond to any future unusual mortality event among bird and seal populations.
