Abstract: Summarises available information on diseases and parasites of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic seals, recorded mainly from clinically normal or apparently healthy and reproductively successful populations. Includes trauma and wounds; tumours; dental, skin, cardiovascular, renal and respiratory diseases; reproductive pathology; neonatal death and pup ill health; lice, mites, crustacea, tapeworms, flukes, roundworms, thorny-headed worms and parasitic protozoa; morbilliviruses, herpes, poxvirus and arbovirus; brucellosis and klebsiella. Human-mediated impacts discussed include persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, plastic debris, and effects of ozone hole and climate change.
