Record #191113:

L.I.F.E. in Antarctic lakes / Birgit Sattler, Michael C. Storrie-Lombardi.

Title: L.I.F.E. in Antarctic lakes / Birgit Sattler, Michael C. Storrie-Lombardi.
Author(s): Sattler, Birgit.
Storrie-Lombardi, Michael C.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: London: Taylor & Francis
In: Polar microbiology : the ecology, biodiversity and bioremediation potential of microorganisms in extremely cold environments. (2009.),
Abstract: Reviews anatomy of Antarctic lakes; defines distinct environmental niches as air, annual or perennial ice coverings, lake water, and sediments; and discusses potential role of Antarctic lakes as sensitive early indicator of dangerous levels of climate change, as complex and fragile structure of their microbial communities reflects changes experienced by neighbouring and distant ecosystems. Describes recent work to develop laser-induced fluorescence emission (L.I.F.E.) techniques for non-destructive, remote and in situ detection of microbial life in ice and snow of Earth's cryosphere.
