Abstract: Describes ecological processes and conditions contributing to microbial diversity observed in McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), and relates these to potential life on Mars. Microbes are found in diverse MDV water-bearing habitats, some ephemeral such as streams and others highly stable such as lake bottoms, but all are primarily dependent on energy inputs from solar radiation and wind. Both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria regulate nitrogen cycle and modern molecular methods have shown that broad range of microbes is present, though Archea are in low abundance across diverse microbial habitats. Data suggest that diversity in MDV is caused by cumulative mutations that persist in environment, partly because disturbance is rarely catastrophic for these slow-growing populations, and low bacterial growth rates result in community where competitive displacement is infrequent.
