Record #191080:

Saline lakes and ponds in the McMurdo Dry Valleys: ecological analogs to martian paleolake environments / Jill Mikucki, and 4 others.

Title: Saline lakes and ponds in the McMurdo Dry Valleys: ecological analogs to martian paleolake environments / Jill Mikucki, and 4 others.
Author(s): Mikucki, Jill.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Cambridge: Cambridge University Press
In: Life in Antarctic deserts and other cold dry environments : astrobiological analogues. (2010.),
Abstract: Reviews evidence for past standing water on Mars, and discusses character, ecology and history of Lakes Fryxell, Hoare, Bonney, Vanda and Vida and numerous shallow ponds in McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Describes role of microbial mats as major portion of living biomass in dry valleys; possible fossilization of lake mats; and perennial lake ice which contains viable microbial communities, including photosynthetic mats. Includes extensive notes on iron-rich subglacial brine which sporadically discharges from face of Taylor Glacier at Blood Falls; and on Don Juan Pond, calcium chloride brine pool in Wright Valley which is believed to remain liquid year round despite winter temperatures below -40°C.
