Abstract: Reviews knowledge of Antarctic dry valley stream ecosystems and potential similarity to fluvial features observed on martian landscape. Describes ecology of dry valley streams, many of which contain cyanobacterial mats that grow during several weeks when streams flow and are then freeze dried during winter. Discusses importance of hyporheic zone of streams in overall biogeochemical processes, such as weathering of minerals and nutrient uptake and transport.
