Record #191052:

Soviet Antarctic plans after the International Geophysical Year: changes in policy / Irina Gan.

Title: Soviet Antarctic plans after the International Geophysical Year: changes in policy / Irina Gan.
Author(s): Gan, Irina.
Date: 2010.
In: Polar Record. (2010.), Vol. 46(238) (2010)
Abstract: Explores thinking of both scientific and political figures in USSR which helped shape Soviet Antarctic policy from 1950s onwards, mainly involving Aleksei Kosygin and Mikhail Somov. Interplay between political and scientific viewpoints when planning post-IGY Antarctic programmes shows that national prestige was area in which interests overlapped, and that Somov was able to reduce effects of government attempts to curtail Antarctic research in light of new international initiatives regarding future collaboration in Antarctic.
