Abstract: | Examines various aspects of medical history of South Georgia from early expeditions of discovery to 20th century whaling industry, based on interviews with surviving whalers and whaling doctors, published academic texts and personal memoirs, and documents archived in South Georgia, Falkland Islands and United Kingdom. Describes provision of medical services from 1775 to 1960s; summarises and discusses morbidity and mortality; and evaluates differences between medical care in South Georgia and standard care. |
