Record #190842:

Effective herding of flatfish by cables with minimal seafloor contact / Craig S. Rose, John R. Gauvin, Carwyn F. Hammond.

Title: Effective herding of flatfish by cables with minimal seafloor contact / Craig S. Rose, John R. Gauvin, Carwyn F. Hammond.
Author(s): Rose, Craig S.
Gauvin, John R.
Hammond, Carwyn F.
Date: 2010.
In: Fishery Bulletin. (2010.), Vol. 108(2) (2010)
Abstract: Examines various modification to otter trawls (which are effective at capturing flatfish but which can affect sea-floor ecosystems) including installation of disc clusters at 9 m intervals to raise trawl sweeps above seafloor (greatly reducing area of direct sea-floor contact). Considers whether flatfish would still be herded effectively by such sweeps. Compares conventional and modified sweeps using twin trawl system, and analyzes volume and composition of resulting catch. Tests sweeps raised by 5, 7.5 and 10 cm. Observes no significant losses of flatfish catch until sweeps are raised by 10 cm.
