Where does the south begin?: Social variability at the southern top of the world / Juan A. Barceló, and 4 others.

Title: Where does the south begin?: Social variability at the southern top of the world / Juan A. Barceló, and 4 others.
Author(s): Barceló, Juan A.
Date: 2009.
In: Arctic Anthropology. (2009.), Vol. 46(1-2) (2009)
Abstract: Argues against assumption of sub-Antarctic adaptation hypothesis that hunter-gatherer societies inhabiting southern and central Patagonia were simple societies. Examines population diversity for ecological, archaeological and ethno-historical data sources, emphasizing economic and social variability while considering social change through time. Evidence suggests unexpected levels of social variability and complexity. Discussion includes Alakaluf, Selk'nam and Yaghan (or Yamana) peoples of Tierra del Fuego and Islands of Beagle Channel.
