Record #190633:

Overwintering of terrestrial Arctic arthropods: the fauna of Svalbard now and in the future / Maria Luisa Ávila-Jiménez, and 3 others.

Title: Overwintering of terrestrial Arctic arthropods: the fauna of Svalbard now and in the future / Maria Luisa Ávila-Jiménez, and 3 others.
Author(s): Ávila-Jiménez, Maria Luisa.
Date: 2010.
In: Polar Research. (2010.), Vol. 29(1) (2010)
Abstract: Investigates cold-tolerance strategies of arthropods living on Svalbard. These animals overwinter either within soil or on surface, and have to tolerate environment where ground is frozen for over nine months each year. Once in cold-tolerant state, animals can be extremely tolerant in terms of both minimum exposure temperature and period of exposure. Outlines four factors influencing overwintering of terrestrial arthropod fauna: warmer winter temperatures; changes in snow fall and snow lie; pollutant load; and dispersal of invertebrates.
Notes:
