Record #190570:
Walruses attack spectacled eiders wintering in pack ice of the Bering Sea / James R. Lovvorn, and 5 others.
Title: | Walruses attack spectacled eiders wintering in pack ice of the Bering Sea / James R. Lovvorn, and 5 others. |
Author(s): | Lovvorn, James R. |
Date: | 2010. |
In: | Arctic. (2010.), Vol. 63(1) (2010) |
Abstract: | Reports observation of walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) pursuing spectacled eiders (Somateria fischeri) within pack ice of Bering Sea, 70-90 m from nearest land. Eiders were in monospecific flocks of thousands of birds within large leads. Walruses apparently tried to catch eiders from below. Eiders responded with "flash expansion" (explosive radial movement) and wing-flapping, and also ran along water surface to escape. Observers were unable to confirm that walruses captured full-grown, flight-capable eiders. |
Notes: | Arctic. Vol. 63(1) :53-56 (2010). |
