[Distribution of dead ice inside moraine dam body of Imja glacial lake, Khumbu region, Nepal: internal structure of moraine dam of Imja glacial lake] / Shuhei Takenaka, Takuya Yabuta, Hiromichi Fukui.

Title: [Distribution of dead ice inside moraine dam body of Imja glacial lake, Khumbu region, Nepal: internal structure of moraine dam of Imja glacial lake] / Shuhei Takenaka, Takuya Yabuta, Hiromichi Fukui.
Translated title: Distribution of dead ice inside moraine dam body of Imja glacial lake, Khumbu region, Nepal: internal structure of moraine dam of Imja glacial lake.

Date: 2009.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2009.), Vol. 72(1) (2009)
Abstract: Reports determination of internal structure of dam body of Imja glacial lake using electrical resistivity tomography and field observation. Focuses on spatial distribution of dead ice, presenting analysis indicating that a) dead ice appears to exist along lake shore connecting lateral moraines, and b) base of dead ice reaches deepest point of underground portion of dam body. Concludes that dead ice currently dams lake water effectively. Heat conduction from water flow and dam surface could result in gradual melting of dead ice from top. Melting may allow gradual drainage of water from spillway, with process continuing until water level becomes low enough to avoid danger of glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) event.
