Record #190531:

Mountain-derived versus shelf-based glaciations on the western Taymyr Peninsula, Siberia / Christian Hjort, Svend Funder.

Title: Mountain-derived versus shelf-based glaciations on the western Taymyr Peninsula, Siberia / Christian Hjort, Svend Funder.
Author(s): Hjort, Christian.
Funder, Svend.
Date: 2008.
In: Polar Research. (2008.), Vol. 27(2) (2008)
Abstract: Examines origination scenarios for former ice sheets in Kara Sea shelf area. Fieldwork carried out on during summer 2002 as part of Quaternary Environment of the Eurasian North (QUEEN) programme based in areas of Gusinaya and Nizmennaya rivers. Shows that on at least two occasions warm-based bedrock-sculpting glaciers expanded north-westwards from western parts of Byrranga Mountains and adjacent hills towards present-day coast of Kara Sea, and at least once crossed it. Confirms that last major glaciation affecting south-western Taymyr did, however, come from Kara Sea shelf, during Early or Mid Holocene according to OSL dates. Area was not extensively glaciated during Last Glacial Maximum ca. 20 kya, although local ice caps may have existed.
