Evaluating the growth characteristics of a glacial lake and its degree of danger of outburst flooding: Imja Glacier, Khumbu Himal, Nepal / Teiji Watanabe, Damodar Lamsal, Jack D. Ives.

Title: Evaluating the growth characteristics of a glacial lake and its degree of danger of outburst flooding: Imja Glacier, Khumbu Himal, Nepal / Teiji Watanabe, Damodar Lamsal, Jack D. Ives.
Author(s): Watanabe, Teiji.
Lamsal, Damodar.
Ives, Jack D.
Date: 2009.
In: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. (2009.), Vol. 63(4) (2009)
Abstract: Examines short-term danger of outburst flood from Imja Tsho, the Himalaya's most intensively studied glacial lake. Focuses on morphological changes to lake and surrounding area since lake's origin, characterizing growth over last 50 years and evaluating risk of catastrophic drainage. Notes that prospects for catastrophe are frequently exaggerated in media. Identifies four stages, most recent of which (1997-2007) has seen areal expansion. Water surface altitude has fallen 37 m from 1964 to 2006, however, and no immediate danger exists. Advocates monitoring of up-glacier and down-valley lake expansion, water level fluctuation and dead ice morphology.
