Record #190495:

Calculating and validating the surface energy balance in the katabatic wind zone of Antarctica, using single-level AWS data / Michiel van den Broeke, and 3 others.

Title: Calculating and validating the surface energy balance in the katabatic wind zone of Antarctica, using single-level AWS data / Michiel van den Broeke, and 3 others.
Author(s): van den Broeke, Michiel.
Date: [2004]
Publisher: Utrecht: Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht
In: Automatic weather stations on glaciers : lessons to be learned : extended abstracts : workshop, 28-31 March 2004, Pontresina (Switzerland). ([2004]),
Abstract: Summarises procedure for calculating Antarctic surface energy balance (SEB) from single-level AWS measurements. Defines SEB and describes calculation of energy balance components from data obtained during 1998-2001 from western Dronning Maud Land. Changing sensor height is monitored with sonic ranger. Katabatic winds prevent riming. Compares: directly measured latent and sensible heat fluxes with those calculated using bulk method; modelled surface temperatures with those derived from emitted long wave radiation flux; measured and modeled snow temperatures. Concludes that SEB may be calculated reliably from single level AWS measurements, provided that radiation components, profiles of snow density and temperature, and surface roughness estimates are available.
