Description of a new subspecies of Coenocorypha snipe from sub-Antarctic Campbell Island, New Zealand / Colin M. Miskelly, Allan J. Baker.
Title: | Description of a new subspecies of Coenocorypha snipe from sub-Antarctic Campbell Island, New Zealand / Colin M. Miskelly, Allan J. Baker. |
Author(s): | Miskelly, Colin M. Baker, Allan J. |
Date: | 2009. |
In: | Notornis. (2009.), Vol. 56(3) (2009) |
Abstract: | Describes and names new subspecies of snipe discovered in 1997 on rat-free Jacquemart Island, off-lier of sub-Antarctic Campbell Island, where it had probably been confined for 170 years. Following eradication of Norway rats from Campbell Island in 2001, snipe began to re-colonise main island from Jacquemart 1 km offshore, and in 2006 12 adults and 5 chicks were caught and one nest found. Genetic analysis of blood samples, and measurements and plumage descriptions, show them to be subspecies of Coenocorypha aucklandica, and specifically distinct from two other extant Coenocorypha snipes (Snares Island snipe C. Huegeli and Chatham Island snipe C. pusilla) |
