| Abstract: | Attempts to reconstruct history of eastern Fennoscandia and its peoples in absence of traditional written sources, and to correct misconceptions in previous studies. Discusses central concepts in European state and border formation and identity-making. Describes geographical conditions of region and examines toponyms and flora. Examines history of Saami and their relationship with Russian and Swedish colonisers of region. Considers their assimilation into European culture which was accompanied by marginalization of traditional way of life. |
