War culture: the Royal Navy and the Falklands conflict / Alastir Finlan.

Title: War culture: the Royal Navy and the Falklands conflict / Alastir Finlan.
Author(s): Finlan, Alastir.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: London: Frank Cass
In: Falklands conflict twenty years on : lessons for the future. (2005.),
Abstract: Describes role of Royal Navy (RN) in 1982 Falklands War, and evaluates effect of RN intervention at pre-war crisis Cabinet meeting in persuading Thatcher that military victory was possible; and predominance of "war culture" among RN officers as significant factor in both drive to accomplish mission and friction that occurred during campaign. Examines role of institutional memory and process of inculcating RN culture into young officers; personal role of Sir Henry Leach, First Sea Lord; organisational consequences of domination of chain of command by submariners, particularly on use of Sea Harrier aircraft; and over-reliance on missile technology from ships at expense of anti-aircraft guns.
