Abstract: Account of late 20th century struggle by indigenous peoples of Canada and Alaska to regain sovereignty and reclaim cultural heritage, demonstrating that indigenous groups and communities have proved adept at applying many sophisticated tools of conflict resolution (e.g. bargaining, negotiation, litigation, arbitration, lobbying, public and media relations, land-use regulation, and "brass-knuckle" politics) in campaign to assert aboriginal rights to self-government.
