Abstract: Although primary cause of Arctic and Antarctic oscillations is often thought to be positive feedback between zonal velocity and transfer of angular momentum by eddy and/or wave disturbances, comparison of variations of oscillation indices and characteristics of eddy (wave) activity gave no strong evidence to support this hypothesis. Anomalies of calculated correlation curves were less significant and less regular than those of correlations between oscillation indices and average zonal characteristics of meteorological fields. Difference in spatial structure of wave activity and zonal velocity anomalies was most pronounced in Southern Hemisphere. Results indicate that wave and eddy disturbances linked to oscillations are not cause, but effect of these oscillations, for example, in interaction of varying zonal flows with mountain masses.
