Decrease of lichens in Arctic ecosystems: the role of wildfire, caribou, reindeer, competition and climate in north-western Alaska / Kyle Joly, Randi R. Jandt, David R. Klein.

Title: Decrease of lichens in Arctic ecosystems: the role of wildfire, caribou, reindeer, competition and climate in north-western Alaska / Kyle Joly, Randi R. Jandt, David R. Klein.
Author(s): Joly, Kyle.
Jandt, Randi R.
Klein, David R.
Date: 2009.
In: Polar Research. (2009.), Vol. 28(3) (2009)
Abstract: Reviews and presents synthesis of existing research on changing Arctic tundra ecosystems in relation to caribou and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) winter ranges. Examines recent long-term regional studies in Alaska that have documented actual effects. Review reveals signs of marked change in Arctic tundra ecosystems. Factors known to be influencing changes include wildfire, disturbance by caribou and reindeer, differential growth responses of vascular plants and lichens, and associated competition under climate warming scenarios.
