Abstract: | Explores and analyses social-historical background to four major expeditions from Heroic Age of polar exploration: Weyprecht and Payer (1872-74), Drygalski (1901-03), Filchner (1911-12) and Wegener (1930-31). Lesser-known historical sources throw light on financial security of expedition participants, selection criteria, leadership skills, and health of participants both during and after expeditions. Also discusses extent to which social dynamic and cultural milieu affect planning and course and outcome of expeditions. |
