Abstract: | Presents study of winter sea ice motion and deformation in marginal ice zone (MIZ) of Bering Sea, at spatial and temporal scales up to 100 km and several days (scales over which sea ice appears as piecewise continuous material). Applies segmentation techniques and statistical methods to high-resolution SAR images to derive ice motion and deformation maps. Dynamic local thresholding (DLT) allows separation into sea ice thickness and type classes based on local intensity distributions. Characterizes observed ice motion, calculates deformation rates and identifies divergence and shear in different regions. Discusses influences on motion of wind, wave, current and internal ice forces. |
