Abstract: Applies multiplicative iterative methods to retrieve sub-pixel snow cover information in Himalayas from medium and coarse resolution multi-spectral AwiFS and MODIS data. Describes Expectation Maximization Maximum Likelihood method, and Image Space Reconstruction Algorithm based on minimization of least squares and Kullback-Liebler distances. Discusses eigenvalues of minimum noise fraction transformation bands, data noise removal and selection of snow, soil and vegetation endmembers. Analyzes variations in normalized difference snow index (NDSI) with sub-pixel snow cover fraction using field spectral reflectance results and satellite images in green and shortwave infrared wavelengths. Describes algorithm validation and convergence rate test, demonstrating superior accuracy, reliability, speed and robustness of iterative model over direct methods.
