Abstract: Presents description of snow avalanche dynamics at level of macroscopic properties of granular system, aiming at reduced description of rheology that accounts for granular interactions without oversimplified lumping into single "effective" viscosity or "turbulent" friction parameter. Describes simple shear motion of avalanche by superimposing horizontal and vertical random velocities of granules on laminar steady flow fields. Presents: characterization of granular effects by random kinetic energy of particles; introduction of effects into pre-existing constitutive model; and comparison of velocity and random kinetic energy profiles with experiments made during two avalanches at Vallee de la Sionne. Discusses insight gained, particularly for avalanches in non-steady states.
