Assessing Franz Boas' ethics in his Arctic and later anthropological fieldwork / Friedrich Pöhl.
Title: | Assessing Franz Boas' ethics in his Arctic and later anthropological fieldwork / Friedrich Pöhl. |
Author(s): | Pöhl, Friedrich. |
Date: | 2008. |
In: | Études Inuit = Inuit Studies. (2008.), Vol. 32(2) (2008) |
Abstract: | Discusses Franz Boas' ethics in his anthropological fieldwork in Arctic and on north-west coast of North America within scientific context of his time. In Arctic, Boas refrained from grave robbery but "exploited membership of white race" and applied pressure on "his Eskimos" to secure scientific goals. On north-west coast, Boas changed his attitude: far from any ethical reflection, he and his collaborators desecrated graves for scientific and financial purposes. Boas subscribed to ethical utilitarianism and sustained strong separation of science and ethics. |
Notes: | Études Inuit = Inuit Studies. Vol. 32(2) :35-52 (2008). In special issue Franz Boas and the Inuit. |
Keywords: | 1 -- Philosophy. 39 -- Ethnography. T -- Social anthropology and ethnography. (*3) -- Arctic regions. (*40) -- North American Arctic. |
